First Trip Out

The team had their first trip out a couple of weeks ago.  It was more of a test run to see if this something that we would like to do and if we could do it.

We wanted somewhere that was easy to get to, interesting and of course something we could lightpaint.  What fits all these criteria?  The Singing Ringing Tree on the outskirts of Burnley.

We arrived at the car park on Crown Point Road just as the sun was setting and what a treat it was too!  So we took a couple of shots before setting off to the tree and getting down to business.

As the light went we began.  I was shooting the tree with speedlites and gels.  Liam was playing with allsorts, Barry our third team member was lighting the tree with torches.

Having previously shot this location in the dark I was keen to get my Pentax K1000 out.  In the first session I shot a monochrome image that I fell in love with and I wanted to see what
it would be like on film.  The K1000 was loaded with a roll of what I consider to be one of the finest black and white films ever made.  Ilford's FP4+.  Set at just under box speed of ASA100 its lovely fine grain make gorgeous prints and negatives.  Working out the exposure time was near impossible.  I wasn't too bothered about the length of the exposure due to the levels of light being extremely low.  I then lit the sculpture with the speedlite and that was the shot done.  No looking at the screen to see if it was right and trying again.  It was that shot or nothing.

The night after it was time to develop the and I was a happy man!  It shot was lovely.

Liam and I decided we would try another shot.  I lit the trees with speedlites and then Liam painted a nice little stick man!

For a first night out it was very encouraging!!!
